Addressing antisemitism: A quantitative analysis of curriculum module descriptions from universities of teacher education in German-speaking Switzerland

Abstract
Antisemitism is a pressing societal issue. Universities of teacher education are called upon to sensitize prospective teachers to its recognition and pedagogical handling. However, the question arises as to how prominently the topic is addressed in teacher education programs. This quantitative study examines the extent to which antisemitism is addressed in the module descriptions of full-time German-language programs (primary and lower secondary level) at all 12 universities of teacher education in German-speaking Switzerland. The analysis of over 5,000 modules reveals, among other findings, that the term "antisemi*" appears explicitly in only two modules. The results are discussed with regard to implications for the governance and further development of higher education curricula.

Peter Gautschi, Prof. Dr. ist Professor für Geschichtsdidaktik an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Luzern (Teil-Ruhestand).
