After a career change, enter the teaching profession… and stay in it? An analysis of portraits of teachers from French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino who have changed career paths, focusing on their professional induction and their intention to remain

Abstract

Teacher induction is the subject of a longitudinal inter-cantonal study (French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino). Based on this study, this article focuses on teachers who enter the profession after a career change and examines their intentions to remain in the teaching profession. First, quantitative data are presented, followed by an analysis of profiles created based on open-ended responses from eight second-career teachers who consider that their induction has been successful: four who intend to remain in the profession and four who state that they do not wish to remain. The article discusses these results and opens some avenues, both for initial and continuing training, as well as for further research on teacher induction.
