Between Prescribed Curriculum and School Implementation: Combating LGBTIQphobia in Vaud Schools

Abstract

The introduction of a school agenda featuring a rainbow flag in the canton of Vaud in 2021 sparked strong reactions, revealing tensions surrounding the integration of LGBTIQ topics into compulsory education. Although the fight against discrimination is included in the prescribed curriculum, its implementation remains uneven and dependent on individual practices. This research, based on interviews with twenty-two teachers from Vaud, examines the obstacles hindering the transition from the prescribed to the implemented curriculum. It explores institutional and personal resistances that slow the integration of these topics and questions the conditions required to effectively introduce the fight against LGBTIQphobia in schools.
